Ms. Miyabe, Ms. Sato and others honored at The Yoshikawa Eiji Awards
The 2007 Yoshikawa Eiji Awards was held on April 11th at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, Hibiya, and saw the 41st Yoshikawa Eiji Literary Award going to Miyuki Miyabe for "Nameless Poison" (Gentosha), and the 28th Yoshikawa Eiji Rookie of the Year Literary Award going to Takako Sato for "Become the Wind for a Single Moment" (Kodansha).
In addition, the Yoshikawa Eiji Cultural Award was presented to five recipients, including Kiyoshi Amemiya, who contributed to mine clearance projects in such places as Cambodia, and Teruko Kikumoto, who continues to carry out activities over many years to provide relief to the street children of the Republic of Kenya by supporting their independence.
Mr. Hisashi Inoue gave high praise, commenting that "the ills of the times are regularly perceived yet difficult to express. This is an excellent work that was written by replacing such ills with characters.
Mr. Sato commented, "I'm glad to have won favorable evaluations for something sports-related. Since I don't play sports myself, I felt the key was to be found in how much I was going to be able to compensate for this fact through research. The research took me four years to complete and gave me enough material to write one book. I am grateful to the prefectural high school students and coaches who cooperated."
The winners of the Yoshikawa Eiji Cultural Award are as follows; Kiyoshi Amemiya, Teruko Kikumoto, Masataro Sakurai (for the establishment of a special museum for the visually impaired designed "to be seen with the hands"), Katsuji Sano (for the development of techniques applied in restoring and excavating domestic and foreign stone ruins, and for supporting the preservation of cultural assets), and Kenichi Horita (for the production of bicycles for the handicapped and other such activities).
