Sales of "The Polite Language of Intelligent People" Reaches 100,000
Distribution of Nihon Bungeisha's The Polite Language of Intelligent People, currently in its seventh printing, reached a total of 100,000 copies on September 3.
The first printing of 10,000 was released in November 2006. The book was displayed near check-out counters, where it drew positive reviews, and went into additional printings. In March of this year, a sales promotion was held at the Shibuya Branch of Bunkyô Dômoto Bookstore, and the book hit number one on the best seller list of new books from March 9 to April 12. Positive reviews continued in July, with the focus on bookstores in busy downtown districts. Sales spread to bookstores in rural areas on August 3, when an advertisement supplement ran in the Yomiuri Shimbun.
As the book sales department at Nihon Bungeisha noted, "This book reflects the conversational strategies used by one link in the food chain, but it highlights the confusion surrounding polite language. We have been promoting this book on display tables and near check-out counters, and it has gained an reputation as an easy-to-read, self-improvement book targeting younger readers."
