It is the post-bubble-economy period of the 1990s. Kaki is a fourth-year female student living in a university dorm. Hiro is a first year student and also a dorm resident. There is a rumor that Hiro's ex-girlfriend killed herself.
One day, when Kaki is cooking in the communal kitchen, Hiro asks her to cook something for his customers. She discovers that the vacant dorm room 209 has been turned into a cafe-bar.
Kaki starts to work as a cook for Hiro's cafe-bar. She is quickly attracted to him. After shopping together for the cafe-bar's tableware, they make love in a hotel. Then he tells her that he has fallen in love with her, but that he has a girlfriend. His high-school sweetheart Kana cut her wrist but didn't die. Kana is still suicidal and he can't leave her.
Kaki continues her relationship with Hiro, with a growing desire for exclusive possession of him.
One night, Kaki finds out that Hiro is also sleeping with another girl, Hisako. Heartbroken, she sends him a resentful e-mail. In his reply, Hiro asks her to see him. Confronted by Kaki, he spits out that he can't stand being tied down by one woman. Enraged, Kaki tells Kana about Hiro's affairs. The relationship between Kaki and Hiro comes to an end.
Hiro leaves the university to avoid expulsion for illegally copying the school's software. Kaki moves on. A short story she wrote out of the memories of the love affair becomes a runner-up in a novel competition, and she joins the ranks of novelists.
Ten years pass. Kaki regrets that she didn't pursue her feelings for Hiro. Though he was a womanizer and wrongdoer, she still loved him. But it's all too late: their paths will never cross again.

Editorial Review

Do you remember what it was like to fall in love with someone? Do you remember you were affected by every little word he or she said - very happy one minute and miserable the next? Have you ever been in the situation where someone you loved didn't love you back? I think many people answer yes, and if this is the case, it's so easy to empathize with the main character Kaki. I think the whole story is very realistic and believable. I can't help suspecting that the author wrote about her own experience.
Though Mika Naitou made her mark by writing sensual romance novels, surprisingly almost no portrayal of sex is found in this book. Instead, it provides plenty of vivid depictions of emotions and interesting conversations. The characters are cleverly compared with typical Japanese youth of early 1990s, and that gives depth to the story.
