The Guide to the Japanese Banking Industry (Tentative title)

Synopsis

The Guide to the Japanese Banking Industry

»» Author's

»» Publisher

The Japanese banking industry, which was once maintained by the traditional banking industry policy, the so-called "convoy system," went through major restructuring and reorganization in an increasingly market-oriented, more deregulated, and globalized policy environment.
Financial deregulation allowed banks to expand into new markets, such as the mutual fund and insurance businesses. Many banks are also strengthening their retail banking business.
Although the banking industry has been recovering from the financial crisis, it still holds 18 trillion yen in bad debts.
After financial reorganization, 152 banks are promoting their own business strategies. They are categorized into six types: city banks, long term credit banks, trust banks, regional banks, secondary regional banks and newly developed types, such as online banks.
Banks are trying to improve the convenience and user-friendliness of banking services. For example, some banks have started to accept reports of lost or stolen cards around the clock.
In order to protect consumers, The Consumer Contracts Law and the Depositor Protection Law were enacted.
In order to survive in a fiercely competitive market, banks need to avoid the traditional emphasis on lending. They need to respond to the increasingly sophisticated and diverse needs of customers, and to cultivate new customers. They must build win-win relationship with their customers using their ideas and various networks.

Editorial Review

The authors clearly give an overview of the state of the Japanese banking industry based on updated figures describing its recent history, its current role in society, its marketing strategies and future trends. Therefore, this book is a great introduction to the industry for anyone who is unfamiliar with it. This book also gives some ideas to anyone who is interested in how to survive in a fiercely competitive market. The banking industry once lost the support of the market because of its outdated business policies. However, it is recovering from the crisis by promoting organizational and operational restructuring and new market-oriented business policies.
