Tenkensai is a festival, normally occurring at the beginning of every summer, where inhabitants pray for safety and health. This year, to coincide with the 50th anniversary, a massive event is planned. The festival's central figure is the Princess Kushinada, a role that is decided after scales are found to have formed on the back of a young woman. The role this year is played by the story's peculiar heroin Saki, a lowly female construction worker. Because of the presumption that the princess's life must be sacrificed, Saki is terrified having been chosen for this dark role.
However, there is a hidden secret behind the festival. The beast Yamata-no-orochi (Eight-Forked Serpent), which was thought to have died long ago, is really still alive. For it, a young girl has been chosen, not just a seeming actor as suggested, but so the soul of the monster can actually be transferred inside of her.
For 50 years, part of this festival has been a reoccurring tragedy for the monster, for its wish is to be instead of the Yamata-no-orochi who was destroyed, as the legends had foretold, but to be the legend of Yamata-no-orochi who is reborn.
Saki, our heroin, who is determined to fight the beast and change her destiny, jumps into the deep black hole that is the beast's lair. But, she is not alone. Manaka, her boss at the unlikely construction company must save her. He follows her into the danger of the monster's den and is determined to lay down his life to protect her. She is saved and finally they have peace. The two are married, have children, and continue their work at the construction business.
This is a work that imparts the feeling that there is nothing more important than living a peaceful and carefree life.

Editorial Review

Tenkensai, a Japanese manga comic, received the prestigious Art Encouragement Award at the Cultural Affairs Agency of Japan sponsored Media Arts Festival of Tokyo. It has also has received much appraise for both its compelling story and dramatic black and white ink work. It took Yumiko Shirai, a female Japanese comic book author and illustrator, a total of ten years from conceptualization to completion for this master of visual artistry.
The book, recalling the essence of the great Greek legends, comes from the Japanese counterpart Kojiki, a record of ancient Japanese mythology. Tenkensai revolves around a terrifying beast deity that appears in the ancient volume. The beast, known as the Yamata-no-orochi, is a monster that must eat and kill the beautiful princess Kushinada, a heroin who is dramatically rescued by the heroic god Susano Onomikoto. In Japan, even to this day, it is not too unusual to believe that such a bizarre snake like deity really exists that possesses strange mystical powers.
Tenkensai intertwines ancient myth with modern times. It is a tale of a man and woman whose paths cross in a very unusual construction business. The story tells us, though the existence of a human being is small, with a powerful will, even the fate ordained by gods can be changed.
